The Circus Comes To Town

August 10, 2008 By: Caesar Category: Thom Bray on Ancients

Titus/ElephantWhen I was a boy, September always meant the coming of the circus with it’s many wild beasts. I can remember being fascinated by the lions, tigers and especially the elephants.

The ancient Romans seemed to share my fascination, and emperors exploited this for their own public relations benefit.

In one particular case, the Emperor TITUS (79-81 AD) opened the new Coliseum, by putting on a spectacular show involving beasts of all varieties. To commemorate that historic event, he struck and distributed a silver coin with his portrait and an elephant on the reverse.

My friend and ancient coin dealer Tom Cederlind has a very pleasing and affordable example of this type on his VCoins website.

ACCG Benefit Auction Opens

August 04, 2008 By: Caesar Category: News

Right now, go to this link, bring your checkbook, and get ready to bid on some fantastic coins that are up for auction to benefit The Ancient Coin Collectors Guild.Athenian Owl Donated by Harlan J. Berk Ltd

The Guild is an advocacy group created to insure that your right to collect ancient coins hangs around for the next generation. That right is being threatened by strong and misguided antiquities laws currently being passed by foreign nations and increasingly recognized and enforced by U.S. Customs.

You owe it to yourself and to this hobby to support this organization.

So, go buy a coin!

New Ancient Coin Podcast

July 31, 2008 By: Caesar Category: News

For a while now, I’ve wanted to do a short podcast that showcases a
few of the hundreds of ancient coins available for sale around the Internet. With so many coins coins available for sale at any given time, listeners might find it fun (and useful) to have one man’s opinion.

The best way to listen is right at the website. There’s a cool Flash mp3 player there, and you can follow along and click on the links to the coins in the show notes. Heck, you may find something you’d like to buy.

The Site and the show are works in progress. If you enjoy it and find it useful, please comment on the comment section and I’ll try and record one regularly, perhaps weekly.

Enjoy.
